The Hero's Journey
A twentieth-century map laid over a thousand older ones.
Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) proposed a recurring narrative pattern — the "monomyth" — drawn from a comparative reading of world mythology, structured around departure, initiation, and return. Screenwriter Christopher Vogler's internal Disney memo, later published as The Writer's Journey (1992), compressed and popularized Campbell's stages into the twelve-beat structure now standard in screenwriting.
Campbell's framework sits within a broader lineage of comparative mythology and Jungian depth psychology, which reads myth as expressive of shared psychic structures (archetypes) rather than historical fact. It has never been the self-description of any single culture's storytellers — it is an outside interpretive lens applied across many traditions, several of which are treated elsewhere on this site in their own attested terms.
From the 1990s onward the monomyth became a default template well beyond film: business and leadership seminars, therapy and coaching frameworks, and game design documents borrow its stage names as a generic scaffold for personal-transformation narratives. This popular use is a modern adaptation of Campbell's already-synthetic model, two removes from any specific mythic tradition.
